HAPPEN was set up to develop the use of the arts in addressing community objectives in Bedfordshire. It is initially a three year programme running between 2005 and 2008.

John Hambley, Project Manager for HAPPEN

John has been active in visual arts and arts management for over fifteen years. As Senior Visual Arts & Crafts Officer for the Arts Council of Wales, between 1997 and 2002 - and with previous project management experience at ORIEL: The Arts Council of Wales' Gallery, The British Art Show 4 (South Bank Centre & National Museum and Gallery of Wales) - he has strengths in artform and policy development and has co-ordinated outreach programmes with an emphasis on inspiration and participation. More recently John was Principal Arts Officer at Bedford Borough Council from 2002 until 2005. Here he managed a series of artist-led interventions and residencies for the town; organising opportunities for creative individuals to take their ideas to wider audiences.

John is also a Board Member for TRACE: Installaction Artspace, Wales' foremost organisation for the promotion of time-based arts through artists' placements, publishing and international exchange. He was a co-founder of Kings Road Studios in Cardiff and assisted in the development of Collectorplan, the Artes Mundi Prize, and establishing a Welsh presence at the Venice Biennale of Art in 2003. Away from his work at HAPPEN, John is the founding Director of Alchemy Creative Solutions Ltd a company that provides independant advice and guidance on all aspects of Public Art commissioning. In 2011, Alchemy Creative Solutions Ltd expanded its scope and reach, resulting in collaborative ventures with BAE Systems and Toshiba amongst others.

In addition to an honours degree in Fine Art from Cardiff School of Art, he also possesses an MSc in the Management of Intellectual Property from the Faculty of Law at Queen Mary College, University of London. John is a practicing artist himself and has work in both public and private collections in Britain.
